Digital Communications
Worldwide Web Consortium
This is an international body where member organizations of the consortium, full time staff and public members all work together to develop a set of web standards. The consortium is led by Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the web) and Jeffrey Jaffe (CEO). The mission of W3C is to lead the web to its full potential, what this potential is, these people decide. The set of web standards is then incorporated by those who make internet browsers and different browsers incorporate these in different ways, such as IE8 not supporting HTML5 where Google Chrome does for instance.

Wireless Application Protocol
WAP is a technical standard for accessing information over a mobile wireless network. A WAP browser is found on mobile devices like mobile phones which use the protocol.

Multimedia Messaging Service
MMS is the way that messages are sent between mobile handsets. These can be used to send messages consisting of text up to 160 characters in length. This standard is developed and maintained by the Open Mobile Alliance but is a member of 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project - manage the 3G mobile data protocol) and WAP Group.

General Packet Radio Service
GPRS is a packet oriented data service, used by mobile devices. The service works on 2G and 3G communication systems. This system works on the volume of data an account is using. This protocol would not be ideal to use with services that require a constant stream of data which is why it is only used on mobile handsets which only use a connection when needed.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is an open wireless technology which is used for exchanging data over a short distance. This protocol is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group which has 15,000 member companies. This technology has been used as a next generation in file transfers from infra-red technology which is still used to detect the status of technology, not really to transfer files since the introduction of Bluetooth.

Broadband Internet Access
Broadband Internet Access, often referred to as just 'broadband' is a connection to the internet which uses a high data rate. This offering is used by most ISP's instead of dial-up modem connections because dial-up connections are limited to 60 Kbit/s and require the use of a telephone line. As broadband can run at a far greater data transfer rate and doesn't require the use of a telephone line.

Voice over Internet Protocol
VoIP is a family of technologies and transmits voice over an internet connection. VoIP has been popularized amongst video gamers using Xbox Live and across computers using Skype. VoIP is capable on most devices which have a mobile internet connection.

Smart Phones
A smart phone is a mobile phone featuring technology used to assist people in their everyday lives. Platforms these phones use include iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and some smaller market Operating Systems. They all combine technology previously seen in Personal Digital Assistants (PDA's) and usually include media players, cameras, high resolution screens and web browsers.

Computers
A computer is a highly programmable machine. Computers are designed to carry out tasks using either a sequence, arithmetic of logical operation. Everything done on a computer is done so using operations, usually referred to as tasks. Modern computers are based on integrated circuits and use much hardware to carry out tasks. Simpler computers are seen in mobile phones and are less powerful because of the size and limited power source.

The Internet
The Internet is a system of interconnected computer networks which use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). It is a network of networks consisting of millions of computers across the world linked through an array of networking technologies. The word Internet is a short form of its technical term, internetwork which is the result of computer networks with gateways which route the traffic which we call the net.

Communication Methods:

YouTubeYouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload and view videos from around the world. YouTube was bought by Google Inc for $1.65billion in November of 2006 and is now operating under a subsidiary of Google.

FacebookFacebook is a social networking website, launched in February of 2004. In July 2011, the website passed 80 million registered users. Users of the website can chat, create a personal profile, uplaod and share images and videos, create a personal profile and send messages across the system. Users must register before they can use the website.
